Automotive Insurance Estimate Information

  • How long will vehicle repairs take?

The body shop must take the time to do the repairs right. If the parts have to be ordered, it could take longer. The estimate will contain a tentative date for the repairs to be completed.

  • What should I do when the body shop and my insurance company do not agree on the repair cost?

Check the appraisal clause in your auto insurance policy. If the insurance company and the body shop cannot meet at the same cost, this could provide a means for a reasonable settlement.

  • What if my insurance company requires a second estimate?

Your insurance adjuster can obtain a competing estimate from a different auto body shop if the shop's owner or his approved representative physically inspect your automobile.

  • What if my body shop requests additional money once repairs have begun?

Your insurance appraiser is obliged to reinspect the damage when repair shops request supplementary allowances.

  • Should I take my vehicle to a drive-in insurance claims center?

No, this is not necessary. Automobiles are too complicated for an accurate optical estimate. A drive-in claims center usually doesn't have the right equipment to assess your vehicle's damage accurately. And even if they do, they do not have a technician from a body shop to make sure that all the damage is noted. An insurance adjuster should be examining your car, truck, or SUV at the body shop that you choose.

  • Do I have to accept an estimate?

No. Do not be compelled to have work done by a shop solely because of lower prices.
